Katherine Schwartz is the owner of Southern Illinois Center for Art & Play Therapy in Carbondale, IL. Katherine is a board-certified art therapist, registered play therapist, and licensed clinical professional counselor. Katherine specializes in art therapy and play therapy with children and adolescents who have experienced trauma and abuse. Katherine uses a wide variety of creative and expressive techniques in her clinical work including doll making, mask making, sculpting with clay, 
sand tray, collage, painting, and drawing. Katherine loves introducing clients to the therapeutic power of creative 
expression. 

Therapeutic Doll Making with Children and Adolescents: An Interactive Workshop 
 
Objectives: 
 
 Participants will increase their knowledge of therapeutic doll making techniques 
 Participants will identify treatment goals that can be addressed through therapeutic doll making 
 Participants will have the opportunity to create one or more dolls to personally experience the therapeutic power of doll making 
 Participants will take home patterns and directions for making at least three distinctly different types of dolls 
 
Of note: Supplies will be provided for this workshop. 

Agenda 
 
(9:00-9:45) or (1:00-1:45): Overview 
 Information on speaker 
 Therapeutic significance of doll making for people who have experienced trauma 
 Doll making techniques appropriate for therapy and how they can be used effectively with different populations 
 Examples of therapeutic dolls 

(9:45-10:15) or (1:45-2:15): Get creative 
 Participants will plan and design their dolls 
 Participants will construct the bodies for their dolls and gather materials for dressing and completing their dolls 

(10:15-10:30) or (2:15-2:30): Break 

(10:30-11:30) or (2:30-3:30): Sew, glue, cut, create … Express yourself 
 Participants will complete their dolls by adding hair, facial features, clothing and accessories 

(11:30-12:00) or (3:30-4:00): Sharing 
 Share individual dolls in dads 
 Group discussion of the overall process of therapeutic doll making 
 Questions and Answers
